Alan Bott founded Pan books in 1944,a former World War I flying ace, he wrote two books on his war experiences before becoming an editor and founder of both The Book Society and The Reprint Society. The first numbered Pan paperback Rudyard Kipling’s ’Ten Stories’ did not appear until 1947. The numbering system was used by both Penguin and Pan for cataloguing purposes prior to the ISBN system which was introduced in 1967. Early Pan titles had no cover price, this was because many were exported to English speaking colonies where they were priced in other currencies.
